Being a Christian is absolutely wonderful. I think it is amazing that the God of the universe who made the 7 billion trillion stars and knows them all by name, knows my name and loves me unconditionally, and came to earth to die so that I could be saved from my sins and can be with him forever! But what is the point of being a Christian other than fire insurance? Let’s dig into the word of God and see what it says, because what I say means nothing, but the word of God means everything.
The first thing Jesus commands us to do is most times referred to as the great commission and it’s found in Matthew 28:19-20. “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” First, Jesus states His authority, and why we should listen. He is telling us that he is the highest authority, all authority belongs to him. Then he gives us the command. Go! Make disciples!
Yes, we are called to share the good news with all people, but Jesus invites us into an intimate relationship with Him, and if we are focused on “getting people saved” (which we really don’t influence that at all, God does all the work) we have missed the point. We should be growing in our relationship with Jesus each day, knowing him more, learning his heart. Because the more we know the Lord, the better we can share the gospel.
We have so many benefits in Jesus, yet we don’t use them. Our beliefs are the Bible, so often we ignore our Bible and are missing all the blessings that you get from the word of God. There are 168,000 bibles bought or given in the united states every day. Yet, many of us leave our bibles on our nightstand, or shelf, and never read them. We got talents that he has bestowed on us and were just wasting them on petty things. We have GOT to get into the word of God, study it, read it, meditate on it. Psalm 1 tells us that the man who meditates on the word day and night is blessed. (Psalm 1:1-2)
We are also called to be the salt and light of the world, showing Jesus with our lives. (Matthew 5:13-14) But if we don’t know Jesus (not know facts about Jesus) then we can’t show him very well. Say you are trying to be like your dad, but you never talk to him, you never listen to what he says, and you ignore him. You can’t imitate your dad if you don’t know him, can you? It’s the same with Jesus.
In summary, the main point of being a Christian is knowing the Lord more and more and sharing the gospel. So go read your bible and share the good news!
