Smiles flash from people everywhere and colorful lights peek out from the windows of houses. Snow gently crunches under my feet, and clouds of puff into the air every time I breath.
It’s Christmas season. A time of year filled with joy and goodwill. But just beyond the bright lights and friendly smiles hides a looming darkness. Pain flashes through my mind as I think of all the fires and earthquakes, floods and droughts, war and famine.
This world is not how it should be. It is not a good place to be. It is cold, dark, lonely. People are cruel, depraved, wounded. We long for hope. Ever since mankind rebelled in the garden of Eden, our world has no longer been good. Our sin has affected everything.
We could not undo the results of our sin. There was no way we could save ourselves. Our only hope of healing was in God. God knew we needed help and He had a plan.
One night in the midst of our cold world, hope was wrapped up in a little baby. Born to a poor young girl, Jesus was the Messiah we were longing for. That little baby was destined to die for the sin that poisoned our hearts. This baby was hope incarnate.
At Christmas, we celebrate His birthday. It happens in the midst of the bleak sun-depraved, cold days of winter. It fits. The life He brought came when our souls were hopelessly lifeless. Jesus came into our dark world to bring light, He became hope in a world that was starving for it.
Now we can have hope, joy and peace despite all the pain of this world because baby Jesus came. Baby Jesus came to die so we could live. He bought us Salvation, God’s gift to us. If we will open it up, the bonds of sin will be broken.
We can live with a peace we can’t explain and a hope that won’t end, all because baby Jesus was born to pay for our sin.
