Hello all! My name is Kirstie, and I’m so glad to be posting here today! As the deadline approached for this post, I started stressing over whether or not this was long enough. In my attempt to find another topic, I read a few posts on Ellie’s blog. I came across the post 5 Lies Kids Believe.
The second lie, (“Someone Else Will Do It”) really stuck out to me, which states that kids think they can’t do something because they think someone else would be better at it. This comes from self doubt, laziness, and other reasons.
My book study group is memorizing 1 John 4:7-21. So far we’ve done verses 7-9, which are the ones I want to talk about today.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. -1 John 4:7-9
God has called us to love others, because He first loved us. Loving others is reflecting the love we know God showed to us. And because He is love, we should also show love. It’s hard for us to love. We’re humans, we mess up, we live in a fallen world.
I don’t mean the, “I have a happy feeling (that might go away quickly) around them” kind of love. It’s when we choose to love those around us, even when they’re down right stubborn and cranky. Me? I’m one of those people who gets irritated easily.
Our definition of love should be based on God and how He defines love.
We shouldn’t be basing love on a pile of feelings, or what we want to do. Because what we want fluctuates based on our feelings, or whether or not we think we can do it right.
We’re not perfect, no one can love perfectly, but we are there to love. Yes, everyone else is to, we all have the same ultimate calling, but what if that person who needs someone to love them, never comes along, because you refused to answer that call? We’re all called to love, no matter how old we are, or what we are, or where we’re at.
What if that call was directed at you, and you missed it, or ignored it, thinking someone else would step in, and they didn’t?
Here are some ways to “stop waiting around and go do it.”
- Pay attention.
- Be aware of the people around you in need of love.
- Pay attention to what God is telling you.
Actively seek out ways, or people to love.
Is it your family? Just doing what is asked with a good attitude is a way of loving them. Or is it that person you vaguely know who needs a friend or someone to talk to? Ask a friend or family member for help and guidance. They might know specific areas, or people for you to start doing.
Speak Life by TobyMac talks about the power of words. We can have a huge impact with the things we say, so speak life with love.
Pray and ask God, How can I love more?
Is there a specific person I could start with? What do I need to do to love that person more?
Do Something by Matthew West talks about pleading with God to fix all the wrong things with the world. But we are called and created to be that light, that person who helps those in need. And the time to love and do something is now.
