Hello all! I hope you are not too bored out of your mind in all this stay-at-home stuff. I hope you are using the extra time to have to really dig deep into God’s word and see what He is trying to tell you. I know I have!
I recently started reading the book “The Power Of A Praying Teen” By Stormie O’Martin and one of the chapters was called “Lord, help me to praise you at all times” and in that chapter there is a list of oh maybe 20 or so reasons to praise God. I got to thinking about those and I took 7 of them and looked up the definitions of the bigger words and then found where those statements were said in the Bible. This research was really fun and eye opening! So I thought I’d share what I found because there is always time to praise God especially when the world seems to be falling apart before our eyes. Even though we are stuck at home, even though the world is shut down, God is still on the throne and He is still worthy to be praised!
So first I looked up the definition of the word praise and here is what I found:
Praise; To commend; to applaud; to express approbation of personal worth or actions. 2. To extol in words or song; to magnify; to glorify on account of perfections or excellent works.
Webster says “To express approbation of personal worth of actions.” God has the most worth out of any person or being! He has also done the most wonderful, beautiful, amazing actions. Webster goes on to say “to glorify on account of perfections or excellent works” Almighty God is perfect and His works are excellent. So even in the definition of the word praise it shows us the nature of God! How amazing is that!?
Now that we know what praise really means let’s get into the 7 reasons to praise God.
- He forgives my sins
Forgive; 1. To pardon; to remit, as an offense or debt; to overlook and offense and to treat the offender as not guilty.
Sin; The voluntary departure of a moral agent from a known rule of rectitude or duty prescribed by God.
“For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon your name.” Psalm 86:5
“No more shall every man teach his neighbor and every man his brother, saying “Know the Lord” for they all shall know me from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more” Jeremiah 31:34
“If we confess out sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
No matter what sin you have committed, He is faithful to forgive and forget. But only when you confess what you have done and are genuinely sorry for what ever you have done. We have a very forgiving God, praise Him for it.
2. He heals my sickness
Heal; to grow sound; to return to a sound state.
Sickness; State of being diseased; disease; malady; a morbid state of the body of an animal of plant in which the organs do not preform their normal functions.
“Now see that I, even I am He , and there is no God beside Me; I kill and make alive, I wound and I heal; no is there any who can deliver from my hand.” Deuteronomy 32:39
“But to you who fear my name the sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings” Malachi 4:2 a
“Who forgives all you inequities, who heals all your diseases.” Psalm 103:3
When we have a God who heals sickness, we have nothing to fear. Now you might be wondering ‘What about all those people who dies from cancer or other illnesses?’ Well, ultimately this is a fallen world and death is a part of daily life so we don’t have to live in a fallen world forever. But let me ask you this: was that person in your life a Christian? If so, that person is more whole now than ever! I don’t know why sickness has to plague our world except because of sin. But God has promised to heal our sickness, on earth or not, He is still good.
3. He saves me from destruction
Destruction; 1. The act of destroying; demolition; a pulling down; submersion; ruin by whatever 2. Death; murder; slaughter; massacre 3. Eternal death
Save; 1. To preserve from injury, destruction or evil of any kind; to rescue from danger 2. To preserve from final and everlasting destruction; to rescue from eternal death 3. To deliver; to rescue from the power and pollution of sin.
“You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and you shall not be afraid of destruction when it comes.” Job 5:21
“Who redeems your life from destruction” Psalm 103:4 a
God does not us to hurt. He will deliver us from destruction because He loves us. Which leads me to number 4.
4. He gives me love and kindness
Love; An affection of the mind excited by beauty and worth of any kind, or by the qualities of an object which communicate pleasure, sensual or intellectual.
Kindness; Good will benevolence; that temper or disposition which delights in contributing to the happiness of others, which is exercised cheerfully in gratifying their wishes, supplying their wishes or alleviating their distress.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
“But you are God, ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abundant in kindness, and did not forsake him.” Nehemiah 9:17 b
He loves you so so much. Run to Him, don’t push Him away when bad things happen, instead praise Him.
5. He gives me mercy
Mercy; That benevolence, mildness or tenderness of heart which disposed a person to overlook injuries, or to treat an offender better than he deserves.
“But I have trusted in your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.” Psalm 13:5
“All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth.” Psalm 25:10 a
Our God is so abundant in mercy. He is waiting for us to turn from our sins, yet we ignore Him as a society. Yet He still loves us and has mercy on us.
6.He shows me how to live
Live; To abide; to dwell; to have settled residence in any place 2. To continue; to be permanent; not to perish 5. To pass life or time in a particular manner with regard to habits or condition
“He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name sake.” Psalm 23:3
When we do what God wills and follow his will for out lives instead of following our dreams, our hopes, our wants we gain blessing so much more blessing than doing life our way.
7. He is slow to anger
Anger; A violent passion of the mind excited by a real or supposed injury; usually accompanied with a propensity to take vengeance, or to obtain satisfaction from the offending party. This passion however varies in degrees of violence, and in ingenuous minds, may be attended to reprove or chide the offender.
Slow; Moving a small distance in a long time; not swift; not quick in motion; not rapid
“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy.” Psalm 103:8
He is not angered easily, He is patient. No matter how many times we mess up He is waiting to help us back up, not waiting to smash us because we messed up again. Like the palmist says He is “abounding in mercy”.
So the next time you get caught up in the daily annoying parts of life, stop. Think about all that God is, who He is, how He acts, and praise Him. He is so worthy of our praise.
I would encourage you to read The Power of a Praying Teen by Stormie Omartian there are also some from the same author for parents, grand parents, etc. I hope you enjoyed this post, if you did let me know in the comments!
